Health clubs, fitness centers, workout whatsits… I don’t care what you call it, I don’t like going! Something about paying to exercise just doesn’t jive with me. I know exercising is very important, and I do it (almost) every day, but here are some tips on how to get your heart pumping without emptying your wallet.

  1. Create your own boot camp.
    • Do cardio exercises like jumping jacks, lunges, high knees, push ups, sit ups, and dips outside in a park or at home. Do each exercise for 60-90 seconds, rest as needed. Repeat 2-3 times. Boom. You just became a drill sergeant.
  2. Join a team.
    • Enter an adult’s sports league or offer to be an alternate. Sports make working out a game, literally!
  3. Take a walking tour of your city.
    • Learn something new while fitting in a workout. Walking is easy because you just need a good pair of shoes and you can do it pretty much anywhere! And who doesn’t want to learn new things about your city?!
  4. Sign up for an obstacle course race, or any race at all for that matter.
    • Obstacle course races keep it interesting, and committing to a race may help to keep your training on track.
  5. Take a hike.
    • No really, get outta here! An afternoon spent hiking is so much more enjoyable than an afternoon in the gym!
  6. Try a track workout.
    • Running burns more calories than almost any other cardio activity, but can get really old really fast if you run the same route or continually train on a treadmill. Try heading to a local school to switch it up!
  7. Use the internet to your advantage.
    • There are lots of coupons and discounts online (even at your very own www.group-health.com) for various activities – like yoga classes, karate, or rock climbing to name a few – out there begging to be used! Give one of these a try to change up a workout and challenge your body.
  8. Turn chores into a workout.
    • Focus on chores that burn the most calories, like vacuuming or scrubbing the tub/floors. For an extra calorie boost, do a set of squats or push ups every time the song changes!
  9. Volunteer!
    • Organizations that have you on your feet do good not only for you, but the community as well. Talk about benefits!
  10.  Practice yoga at home.
    • There are tons of yoga workouts online, and all you need is your body and a comfy space!

Exercising out of the gym can do your body and your mind good. Get out there and try it! What are your favorite exercises to do at home or away from the gym?
