During summer, I love seeing all of the great produce on sale at the grocery store. This time of year, fruits are at their peak of freshness and I like to take advantage of their great flavor as often as I can. Most fruits are easy enough to prepare, but sometimes there are fruits that can be a tougher nut to crack! Let's take a look at pineapple...
Cutting a pineapple had always been a bit intimidating to me. I mean, honestly, looking at a pineapple, there doesn’t really seem to be a logical place to start! But since I love the taste of fresh pineapple and don’t want to pay the premium price of pre-sliced fruit, I was determined to find a way to (safely) do it myself.
Here are some step-by-step instructions that I came across and found to work like a charm! Startcooking.com also has some really helpful pictures accompanying each step – check it out!
-
Start by removing the top, followed by the bottom.
-
With the pineapple sitting firmly on the cutting board, start slicing off the outer layer of skin.
-
Once the outer layer has been removed, cut the pineapple into slices (I like to cut mine about 1” to 1.5” inches thick.).
-
On each slice, trim out the center (or core), as this can be very tough to chew.
Voila! Your pineapple is ready to serve! I usually prefer to cut it into chunks at this point and toss it in with a fresh fruit salad. To pick the perfect pineapple, look for a fruit that has crisp green leaves and feels uniformly soft to the touch. If you feel specifically softer areas, that means the pineapple is over-ripened.
