The other morning I was craving cereal. I poured a bowl of shredded wheat, and then came the big disappointment. My skim milk was expired and I had missed the sell-by date by five days! I wasn’t sure whether or not I could drink it so I decided to err on the side of caution and have something else for breakfast. Later, I did some research to see if it is safe to drink milk after the sell-by date. I discovered the answer and also came across a great resource in the process.
According to StillTasty.com, milk that has been properly stored will generally stay drinkable for about a week after the “sell-by” date on the carton. (Turns out I could have had my milk after all! Darn it!) The Dairy Council of California explains that a week is the general case, as several factors will influence what happens in your fridge after the sell-by date has passed.
Here are a few tips to help keep your milk fresh:
-
Keep your milk continuously refrigerated
-
Seal the carton well after each use
-
Make sure the temperature of your refrigerator is continuously set at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit
Remember to discard any milk that develops an off odor, flavor or appearance. Visit StillTasty.com to find out how long other foods and beverages will stay safe. Feel free to leave a comment below on any interesting findings you come across!
